Dipped
Products strategic business audit
Dipped Products (DPL), one
of Sri Lanka's foremost value-added exporters and a leading player in
the global rubber gloves (hand protection) market, have just concluded a
Strategic Business Audit, based on MTl's internationally acclaimed 8S
model.
Having pioneered the concept
of value added exports, the Hayleys subsidiary DPL has made significant
progress in a sustainable manner since its beginning in 1976. Today DPL
is a Rs. 3 billion, public quoted company, with a great reputation for
top-end hand protection (rubber gloves) solutions. DPL's products are
sold in 45 countries and have recently forward integrated with a
strategic equity stake in one of their customers in Italy.
In carrying out the
strategic audit, MTl's Bahrain-based CEO and consultant Hilmy Cader,
identified several key success factors of the DPL: Company Leadership,
staff commitment, investment in technology at the right time and the
decision to add value (vs. a commodity approach). Commenting further he
said "DPL's bottom-line in a highly competitive global market speaks for
itself'.
Tanky Wickremeratne, the CEO
of DPL, under whose stewardship the company has grown to the current
status, felt that the current global market changes have challenged the
company to further sharpen its strategic focus and consequently invited
MTI Consulting (who have carried out many successful consulting
assignments with Hayleys subsidiaries) to carry out the strategic audit
-based on which to develop a long term strategic plan.
MTI's 8S based Strategic
Business Audit and Planning Process involved DPL's 30 strong management
team, who carried out several research assignments and took part in a 2
day off-site residential, workshop, culminating with the 8S based
Planscape.
MTI's 8S is a broad-spectrum
strategic planning process; starting with the Scope of the business
works its way down to Systems -in a sequential and flexible manner. It
is a very comprehensive, all encompassing model that also covers
Structure, Staff, Systems and Social Responsibility -in addition to the
obvious aspects of Objectives and Strategies.
MTI's 8S is conceptually
strong, challenges conventional wisdom, highly practical and simple. One
pagers and bullet points are the norm for documenting the plan. Above
all, MTl's 8S provides a very strong and direct link to the bottom-line
at every stage of the model.
At the end of the audit
Hilmy Cader commended the enthusiasm and commitment of the DPL team, who
will now form into cross-functional teams to ensure implementation of
the plan, with MTl's support.
